God of Pop!

Posted by Kavin on June 28, 2009

I woke up on last friday morning with a news that the legendary singer and dancer Michael Jackson has passed away due to a cardiac arrest. It was a shocking news to the world and to all his fans. The fact that this has happened at the time when he was about to perform his final concert is really sad and I am sure a lot of fans throughout the world, and also all the people, who loved him and also hated him, would shower their respect to this legend.

It is as if I know MJ right from my birth.I remember my dad and uncle listen to Michael Jackson songs when I was a kid. I still remember watching a young guy waking up from his bed and dancing to the tunes of ‘Beat it’. It was only a few years later when I was introduced into the world of pop music from the ‘Dangerous’ Album of MJ. I even remember the day when they announced on music television that they are going to play the premiere of a song from his album ‘Invincible’. I remember the days when I listened or watched MJ songs without break along with my cousins. But now I have to remember the day when I heard about the demise of the King of Pop – Michael Jackson.

MJ was surrounded with controversies right since he became famous. He overcame all the controversies and stood like a king as he is. He loved children. He built a theme park for children, called it as Neverland and also took children from orphanages and schools on a free trip to his theme park. Though he suffered financial crisis, he never wished to sell away the land and in the end, but in the end, he sold that land as a last resort.

I always wished that MJ and ARR should perform together in a song. To my shock, they were indeed preparing themselves for a performance to support unity in humanity. This incident had happened after ARR had won two oscars. People would always remember MJ for two things – his passion for entertaining people and his concentration on social causes.

There may be people who would try to fill his place but it is not really easy to replace a king who has ruled for more than three decades. He is the King of Pop and will always be the King. I pray for his family and well wishers Let his soul rest in peace. The world may have lost him but his music will be remembered forever. His dance will be remembered forever, not to forget the famous moonwalk. And most importantly, just like every other legend, MJ would be remembered forever. The fact that the increase in the download of the music video thriller, which has been a record breaking sensation of all time, even after his death only proves that his music journey has not ended. It will continue forever. His voice will still be heard, his moves will still be watched and like God, his presence will be felt wherever music is. He is the God of Pop!
The following video appears in the Dangerous video album. This video is a great tribute to him. Brace yourself!

Meeting THE BOSS!

Posted by Kavin on February 4, 2009

Speaking of stars in the previous post, its time to speak about the Superstar.

Last Wednesday, I happened to miss the college bus and reached college late by 9 am along with my friend Hemnath. I found several vans which I immediately recognized as Film service vehicles. I asked my friend Hemnath what shooting is going on. He said it is the much hyped Enthiran (Robot) starring the superstar Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai and directed by Shankar. I thought the film shooting held at my college premises ended during the pongal holidays but Hemnath confirmed that it did not and it was postponed to that day.

After attending the next two classes, several of my classmates left after the lunch to catch a glimpse of the superstar. I didn’t want to miss the extended afternoon class that day but only when I read message from one of my classmate Lokesh that he has already got autograph from the Superstar himself, I got frustrated. Almost the entire class started to the auditorium, where the shooting was held, after the class got over.

The superstar had come out for lunch and he was inside the caravan. A small crowd of final years were there as the other batches had classes going on. It was said that the superstar would come out by 2:30. The time was still 1:45. I decided to wait rather than going home. I didn’t know what the crowd was doing as I was speaking to my friends over the phone. At that time, one of my classmates came and asked for any paper or notebook to get autograph. I lended my notebook to get autograph for her and for me too.

Then suddenly the tension in the crowd arose and only then I came to know that the Superstar had signed yet another set of autographs for the eagerly awaiting fans from inside of the caravan. Mine had still not gone inside the caravan. We waited for few more minutes when the security asked us all to move away. We all went back when I heard a loud cheering sound from the surrounding college mates. I immediately knew the reason and turned around to see the Superstar himself.

To describe his character style in one word, it was COOL. He looked as young as a thirty year old guy and he smiled and waved at us as he moved towards the auditorium through the back door. My friend ABC tried to take a snapshot of the superstar but the security found the camera mobile in his hands before he could even think of the word ‘click’. He snatched the mobile and examined it before giving it back to him.

The entire students galloped in joy and headed to the main entrance to catch yet another glimpse of the Superstar. One of the few foreigners, who had possibly come for the shoot, was taking a video shoot of the craze of the students when they moved up and down at every chance they could get to see what is happening inside the auditorium. But luck didn’t favour them as many of them left in vain. Luck didn’t favour me too as my classmate didn’t manage to get autograph as it had got late for the superstar for the shoot.

Although the security was tight and strict about the camera rules, someone had managed to take a photo of the superstar and it was even leaked and published in a recent edition of a newspaper. It shows how people are well and good to get into others’ privacy and also news agencies’ desperation to get a copy of a hot news.

Marudhanayagam : Running in theatres???

Posted by Kavin on December 25, 2008

I was going through the showtimes of the movies and came across this.

This is one of the funniest online things I ever came across. Click on the link for a larger view.

These guys have stated that Marudhanayagam, actor Kamal Haasan’s dream venture, is running in Mayajaal. There can be mistakes while publishing the web page but this seems to be really too much. Kamal would’ve been dreaming about the film’s release but not until he has completed it. Ha ha.

Who is the next King?

Posted by Kavin on June 15, 2008

Apart from tAjithhe Superstar Rajinikanth, only twoVijay others have made the theatres as a festival occasion. They are none other than Ajith and Vijay. These two stars have been contenders for the next Superstardom for a very long time. I don’t remember how these two got into the track anyway. But these guys gave some good hits and they have created a name for themselves in Tamil Cinema.

Let us not go into detail about their hits and flops. Around 10 years back, both these stars were not producing any hit movies. They were content with success with one movie or the other. Both struck gold on several occasions having given smash away hits when all of a sudden, they once again traveled in the failure road.

After a series of flops, Vijay’s success rose with the release of Thirumala. I remember a headline in popular news portal reading, “Can Jyothika once again prove success for Vijay, who hasn’t been able to give away hits, like what they both did in Kushi?” After that his success was at his peak with the hit of Ghilli and he started giving runaway hits. Ajith wasn’t riding in success but he instead was riding on wheels for the racing, his favourite sport.

In my school, there used to be a lot of Vijay fans (atleast that’s what I thought them to be as they were ready to tease Ajith whenever possible). There used to be a very few Ajith fans and they were helpless. In my college, it was just the opposite. There are too many Ajith fans. In my first year culturals, when the audience shouted “Thala pola varuma!?” (Can anyone match ‘The Head’ (Ajith)?), I was wondering whether they are just supporting or were they real fans.

Vijay was continuing to give away hit movies while Ajith was not so lucky. But he was awarded with a hit for his awesome performance in ‘Varalaaru’ aka ‘Godfather’. Even then, his luck faded away with that single hit. Same luck faded away with Vijay even though his film Pokkiri was a box-office hit. Several television critics showed Vijay and the film in a bad yet funny light. Perhaps it is because of this I would say that Ajith reentered the competition.

Most of the stars today give punch dialogues but Vijay was blamed for doing so. Most of the film stars in the world are doing superman stunts. But Vijay was blamed. Even before the release of Vijay’s ‘Azhagiya Tamizh Magan’ (ATM), there were some messages that criticized the movie. If it had been three years back, the message content was mostly about Ajith. And also ATM did not run so well as expected. And more interestingly, Billa, the remake of superstar’s yesteryear hit, was due on release and it produced great expectations among Tamil Cinema lovers. I just then saw several tamil fans promoting the movie ‘Billa’.

Ajith surprised everyone with his interview to TV channels, as he normally doesn’t give interviews. It came at the right time just before the release of Billa and it added more expectations. Expectations didn’t fail this time, as Billa was a blockbuster hit. Ajith is on track again. He has promised that he would give nice entertainers.

I was shocked by the amount of messages criticizing ‘Kuruvi’ even months before the release of the movie. Perhaps they thought this is the time to revert to Vijay. This is what the fans have been doing when the stars are already let down by flops. This is where I would say, “Learn from Bollywood”, as there we could see top stars acting with each other. I don’t think there is any more chance here to see Ajith and Vijay doing a film together (for statistics info, they have done a film together).

If Vijay and Ajith had not criticized each other in their films, things would’ve been different. If fans hadn’t bothered about the race to superstardom, things would’ve been a lot different. Even Vijay had once said that he likes ‘Pithamagan’ movie and has admitted that he can’t act in such movie. He wants to give pure entertainers. So be it! Ajith wanted to experiment a lot in his movies. So be it! Why the people want them to be different? It’s not about who would be the next superstar but about who would give good films. Good films end up being a hit. Superstar Rajinikanth., the King, is already there and he is ruling and he would be the final king.
