Paradigm is the symposium organized by the CSE department of SSN College of Engineering. Paradigm 08 was the one organized by my batch on August 30th and I was glad to be a part of it working for the success of the symposium.
The management told us that there should be no gaming event and informals event this time in the symposium. That doesn’t make any difference to me though it definitely does to the turnout of the crowd. I was wondering whether to go for the Programming or debugging committee or to go for the Magazine (Exemplar) committee (which I did during my 3td year). I have had enough of this magazine committee even in my 3rd year. Also this time, there would be two or three printed copies. Rest copies would be e-magazines. So I thought I would be going for programming. But the unexpected event of assigning the coordinators for each committee had occurred when I was in leave preparing for an exam. And unfortunately, my friend Karthick had given his name and mine for the magazine committee.
When I returned to college, I thought of resigning from the post (he he). So I went to my department student secretary Karmega Vannan and told him that I may not be working for magazine committee since I had to do an exam. He didn’t object. And I didn’t bother to speak anything further about it. Things changed! I went to the symposium room again to only meet Karmega Vannan who asked me a question as if he didn’t remember anything that I had spoken to him earlier, “How is the magazine work going on?”. I replied, “Ya! It had started!”.
Now it was Karthick’s turn to take leave for his exam. The other member in the magazine committee was a guy named Shivram, who was also in other committees and he was busy with that work. Now it was left to me to do the most boring part of the editor’s job – to go and collect the articles. I had asked permission to have a color magazine since it was e-zine, so sketches were allowed. I went and spoke to all the classes along with the other coordinators and they just listened with diligent attention that one would say they were least bothered about writing articles. As expected, just two articles had turned up. There was also an article contest this time, which means that students from other colleges can submit their articles and participate in the contest. One article had come from them so far.
Shivram was still busy with other committee and he couldn’t contribute much to the magazine. A timely help came from a girl named Mrinalini, who said she was also in the magazine committee. Well, I didn’t find her name in the committee list. I got really nice help from her in getting the articles. We split the classes among ourselves and went and spoke personally to each student whom we thought would write articles. The staff incharges for the committees were put up and surprisingly, there were three staffs assigned for the magazine. I went and informed all the three staffs. Speaking of staffs, I decided to collect articles from some of the staffs in my department. We went to some of the staffs and owing to their busy schedule, they had one common answer, “I will try!”.
The second and third years were leaving for tour that weekend, just a week before the symposium. Hence the articles from them were much needed before they leave for the tour. Articles poured in slow and steady into the mail inbox. I, along with the secretary and two other guys Manoj and Srivatsan, went and met the HOD, principal and Dean to get their messages for the magazine.
I was in desperately in need of a student who could design the cover for the magazine. Two final year guys Dhilip and Dileep promised to take the matters into hand if no one else offered to help. Help came from the third year guys. I just told my idea of the cover, asked them to make it in plain green background and to make it professional. They had given it to a friend who could do it. But what I got back as the cover was only a disappointment to me. They had designed something like a poster. I later came to know that they had used the same design used for the banner and had only changed the name. I just told them back that I need something different and to not have the poster size. The third years left for tour on Saturday the 23rd, and also gone away with them is the help for design cover.
Both Dhilip and Dileep agreed to do the cover during the weekends but since they were busy with their own work, they didn’t do it. Worst, I got fever on Monday and couldn’t turn up. The deadline they gave me was Tuesday the 26th evening. Karthick had started coming to college and Shivram was also free. Many articles had come then. So they started designing the magazine template. On Tuesday, I went to the symposium room only to find several people questioning me, “Where is the magazine?”. It was supposed to be added to the symposium CD and it was needed by Wednesday evening. All I could answer is, “It is getting ready!”. It was indeed true.
Dileep had designed some magazine covers. The elements he added to the magazine cover were all good but there was something not so good about the background. With Karthick and Shivram designing the basic layout of the magazine in a laptop and adding contents to it, I decide to take the cover design work into my own hands. After finding a fine MAC system for myself, I started designing with some help from a friend named Hemnath. We were designing some cover with fire or computers as the theme. Soon, Hemnath left and I decided to go back to green. I quickly designed some cover, added the elements that was initially added by Dileep, added some text. It looked good! I waited to go home and add the title as I have many interesting fonts at home.
On Wednesday, I went to college with a magazine cover and asked for suggestions. This time, a lot of suggestions came from my friends – Koushik, Dhilip and Dileep. With good help from them, I furnished the cover with their suggestions. The back cover was simple and was designed in no time. Meanwhile Karthick was designing the magazine and Shivram was designing the e-zine in their laptops. The magazine was almost ready. A staff, who told she couldn’t find time to write any article reconsidered her decision. She called me and asked me to check my mail the next day at 1 pm and if there is no article from her before that time, we could continue with our publishing work.
The next day at 1 pm, there were no articles from the staff. So we decided to close the editing work and there ended the job of the editors. Exemplar 08 was ready! I didn’t go on Thursday. So Karthick and Shivram submitted the finished copy of Exemplar. Though tiring it was, I had a very nice experience and I guess others felt the same. Thanks to everyone who contributed to Exemplar in some way.
