When mobile gets crazy…

Posted by Kavin on September 20, 2008

What would happen if the middle button of the analog key in your mobile stops working? Well I would say it is never a problem. Cause it would be much better to have it not working rather than working abnormally. Yes quite recently, the middle button got pressed and remained pressed and ever since that, my mobile has gone crazy.

Until then, the middle click button, which was supposed to give only a single click, was giving double clicks. I remember that I didn’t even do anything that day when it happened. I didn’t even drop my mobile on that day. But it had happened! The menus were automatically getting opened. I tried my best to close them all and to my dismay, I found that the middle button had no click sound. It happened during class hour and so I couldn’t do anything much that time (not that I have done anything to it now).

Since then, my mobile has got life! It has gone crazy. It automatically calls any number it finds. Suddenly I look at my mobile and see call time running for a call that I never intended to call. It automatically sends blank messages to the people to whom I intend to send an actual message. I find it extremely difficult to access most part of the menus, which would be possible only with the analog key. But turning the analog key to any direction would result in the automatic press of the middle button and there begins the problem.

An academic week has passed since the problem started and I am managing with it. I have managed to access the other part of the menus by careful use of the analog key (Probability of success is 1/10). Thanks to the problem that there are 1050+ messages in my inbox since I couldn’t delete.

The best thing to do is to give it to the service center for repairing. But until then, I have found the best way to gain control of my mobile is to lock it. Ha ha. Yes my mobile has become like a crazy ball. It would look normal but once bounced, it would bounce on and on and on. ;)

The Paradigm

Posted by Kavin on September 13, 2008

August 30, 2008.

Paradigm 08 was the CSE symposium organized by my college and it was a huge success. Usually my dept symposium would be organized on Fridays, but due to the entry of the first Bio-Medical final years, our symposium was pushed to Saturday. It was always a question to me whether students would travel 40 kms to attend a symposium. Further, there was no gaming and informals event. But I still expected some decent crowd as my symposium has always lured participants.

Having completed my symposium magazine (Exemplar 08), I decided not to be in any particular committee (though I wished to). For the first time ever, I managed to witness all the events that was happening in my symposium. Since Karthick was also in the magazine committee, he too accompanied me. Before attending the inaugural event, we decided to pay my dept a visit to see the decoration work. We witnessed the result of hard work and creativity, as the decoration work was really cool. Kudos to the decoration team!!! Here are some pictures I took.

We then left to witness the inaugural event and saw tremendous crowd waiting for something to happen. Then there was this formal inaugural event – welcome address, speech by the dignitaries, speech by the student president and speech by the chief guest. The chief guest gave a speech about entrepreneurship and it was really good. Then there was the release of the magazine (Oh! How did I forget about that?) My friend Karthick said the magazine had not come as expected. Next was the most awaited presentation videos neatly done by the media team. The inaugural event got over and we headed to the Computer block to go to the Debugging event.

Here are the presentation videos.

The debugging event was organized efficiently. It was there I managed to get the magazine from the hands of a junior. It was sooner than I expected. Yes, the magazine was not like we had expected. The cover should have been in glossy printout. Since it was not, it was not so attractive. I didn’t complain either (neither was there anything to complain about). The huge crowd, which managed to find the debugging event, was coming in fast. So we headed to the dept once again.

The quiz events were going on in the ground floor and the first floor. We headed to the MAC lab to see the first prelims round of Digital Art. I managed to take a pic here too.

We went down to see the Programming event organized by my friend Arun. It turned out to be more successful than expected as there were always participants waiting outside.

We headed to the Old CSE Seminar Hall to see the Paper Presentation event. It was like a peaceful war. Participants trying to explain their papers and trying to defend themselves from the mastermind staffs of my department, was really like a war. We would have seen two or three papers and left. By the time we left, most of the prelims were almost over and it was nearing lunch.

My friends Hari and Inchara just then arrived. They didn’t want to participate in any event. After taking some rest, we witnessed the Quiz finals. We were then sitting outside the audi when suddenly all the participants had started coming out. It was just 3:20 pm. It is not supposed to be over! Did I just miss the valedictory function?! I went inside the audi to find my batch posing for the group photo. Did I miss it too?! Nope. I managed to join them for the last few snaps.

Paradigm 08 was over. The shift has occurred (er… don’t ask me what it means!). It was a grand success. Thanks to 2238 participants who had turned up and credits goes to the Paradigm 08 team.

Making of Exemplar 08 – An Editor’s story

Posted by Kavin on September 5, 2008

Paradigm is the symposium organized by the CSE department of SSN College of Engineering. Paradigm 08 was the one organized by my batch on August 30th and I was glad to be a part of it working for the success of the symposium.

The management told us that there should be no gaming event and informals event this time in the symposium. That doesn’t make any difference to me though it definitely does to the turnout of the crowd. I was wondering whether to go for the Programming or debugging committee or to go for the Magazine (Exemplar) committee (which I did during my 3td year). I have had enough of this magazine committee even in my 3rd year. Also this time, there would be two or three printed copies. Rest copies would be e-magazines. So I thought I would be going for programming. But the unexpected event of assigning the coordinators for each committee had occurred when I was in leave preparing for an exam. And unfortunately, my friend Karthick had given his name and mine for the magazine committee.

When I returned to college, I thought of resigning from the post (he he). So I went to my department student secretary Karmega Vannan and told him that I may not be working for magazine committee since I had to do an exam. He didn’t object. And I didn’t bother to speak anything further about it. Things changed! I went to the symposium room again to only meet Karmega Vannan who asked me a question as if he didn’t remember anything that I had spoken to him earlier, “How is the magazine work going on?”. I replied, “Ya! It had started!”.

Now it was Karthick’s turn to take leave for his exam. The other member in the magazine committee was a guy named Shivram, who was also in other committees and he was busy with that work. Now it was left to me to do the most boring part of the editor’s job – to go and collect the articles. I had asked permission to have a color magazine since it was e-zine, so sketches were allowed. I went and spoke to all the classes along with the other coordinators and they just listened with diligent attention that one would say they were least bothered about writing articles. As expected, just two articles had turned up. There was also an article contest this time, which means that students from other colleges can submit their articles and participate in the contest. One article had come from them so far.

Shivram was still busy with other committee and he couldn’t contribute much to the magazine. A timely help came from a girl named Mrinalini, who said she was also in the magazine committee. Well, I didn’t find her name in the committee list. I got really nice help from her in getting the articles. We split the classes among ourselves and went and spoke personally to each student whom we thought would write articles. The staff incharges for the committees were put up and surprisingly, there were three staffs assigned for the magazine. I went and informed all the three staffs. Speaking of staffs, I decided to collect articles from some of the staffs in my department. We went to some of the staffs and owing to their busy schedule, they had one common answer, “I will try!”.

The second and third years were leaving for tour that weekend, just a week before the symposium. Hence the articles from them were much needed before they leave for the tour. Articles poured in slow and steady into the mail inbox. I, along with the secretary and two other guys Manoj and Srivatsan, went and met the HOD, principal and Dean to get their messages for the magazine.

I was in desperately in need of a student who could design the cover for the magazine. Two final year guys Dhilip and Dileep promised to take the matters into hand if no one else offered to help. Help came from the third year guys. I just told my idea of the cover, asked them to make it in plain green background and to make it professional. They had given it to a friend who could do it. But what I got back as the cover was only a disappointment to me. They had designed something like a poster. I later came to know that they had used the same design used for the banner and had only changed the name. I just told them back that I need something different and to not have the poster size. The third years left for tour on Saturday the 23rd, and also gone away with them is the help for design cover.

Both Dhilip and Dileep agreed to do the cover during the weekends but since they were busy with their own work, they didn’t do it. Worst, I got fever on Monday and couldn’t turn up. The deadline they gave me was Tuesday the 26th evening. Karthick had started coming to college and Shivram was also free. Many articles had come then. So they started designing the magazine template. On Tuesday, I went to the symposium room only to find several people questioning me, “Where is the magazine?”. It was supposed to be added to the symposium CD and it was needed by Wednesday evening. All I could answer is, “It is getting ready!”. It was indeed true.

Dileep had designed some magazine covers. The elements he added to the magazine cover were all good but there was something not so good about the background. With Karthick and Shivram designing the basic layout of the magazine in a laptop and adding contents to it, I decide to take the cover design work into my own hands. After finding a fine MAC system for myself, I started designing with some help from a friend named Hemnath. We were designing some cover with fire or computers as the theme. Soon, Hemnath left and I decided to go back to green. I quickly designed some cover, added the elements that was initially added by Dileep, added some text. It looked good! I waited to go home and add the title as I have many interesting fonts at home.

On Wednesday, I went to college with a magazine cover and asked for suggestions. This time, a lot of suggestions came from my friends – Koushik, Dhilip and Dileep. With good help from them, I furnished the cover with their suggestions. The back cover was simple and was designed in no time. Meanwhile Karthick was designing the magazine and Shivram was designing the e-zine in their laptops. The magazine was almost ready. A staff, who told she couldn’t find time to write any article reconsidered her decision. She called me and asked me to check my mail the next day at 1 pm and if there is no article from her before that time, we could continue with our publishing work.

The next day at 1 pm, there were no articles from the staff. So we decided to close the editing work and there ended the job of the editors. Exemplar 08 was ready! I didn’t go on Thursday. So Karthick and Shivram submitted the finished copy of Exemplar. Though tiring it was, I had a very nice experience and I guess others felt the same. Thanks to everyone who contributed to Exemplar in some way.

Century!

Posted by Kavin on September 3, 2008

Not only Sachin can hit a century. Even I can ;) . This is my 100th post and I am quite shocked that I took such a long time to reach my 100th post, having started in January 2006 (Maybe this is Dravid’s way of reaching century ;) ). I am pretty pleased to post this on a wonderful day – Vinayakar Chathurthi.

I didn’t know what to actually post. My first thought was to list out all the posts that I had made earlier. That would take ample amount of time. Besides, it is always in my archive list. One of my college friends suggested posting another picture of a chocolate cake as I did for my 50th post. “Just one more chocolate cake pic and it is over!”.

Finally I decided to start with my blog statistics. Here is the statistics as given by Blog Patrol.

Created on: 27 2007 (I couldn’t find out the date although the year is confirmed).

Since the day of creation:

Total Visitors : 5104

Total Hits : 5786

  • My blog has more number of visitors in the morning rather than in the afternoon.

I don’t know whether the following statistics is for the past one-week or the entire counter history. And the following statistics are for my blogger blog.

Top ranked posts or links in my blog:

128 visits for my March 2006 archive!!! I have seriously no idea why that archive has too many visits. It tops the list!

111 visits for my home page.

46 visits for my post on Chocolates! (I wonder how one could end up in this post).

43 visits for my post on Pen drive Viruses (I hope it has helped many)

21 visits for my January 2007 archive. (I wonder why!)

Some of the other top visits include the post on Ajith vs Vijay, Copy Cats posts, IPL posts and many more.

Top Referrers:

238 visits from Google Search.

28 Self-Referring/Bookmarker

11 from my Orkut profile.

The rest from my friends.

Top Search Keywords:

Most of the search keywords have been on how to remove the viruses from the Pen drive, on chocolates and on Ajith and Vijay. One of the weirdest search keywords that led to my blog is

www.worldofkavin.blogspot.com (Why did someone enter my blog address into a google search bar?)

During the last one-week, visits have come from the following countries. With too many proxy servers lying around, I wonder whether these are true.

India 26

Australia 13

United States 9

Peru, Chile, United Kingdom 2

New Zealand, Argentina 2

I would like to thank my friends Nithya, Inchara, M.S.Karthikeyan, Vivek, Arun Kumar for reading my blog : ) . I also would like to thank my other friends and visitors who read my blog. I would also like to thank everyone for their comments. :)

See you all with my 101st post soon.

Anyway here is a cake :)
