Up in the air @ 35000 feet

Posted by Kavin on August 10, 2008

35000 feet. I don’t know whether I was really flying that high. Atleast that’s what the flight brand says. It happened last June and it was only my second trip on a flight. My first flight journey was an uneventful one. I didn’t bother to look outside the windows then and before I could finish off the breakfast they gave, the flight journey ended. I really liked my second experience although I slept during the latter half of the journey.

My parents, my sister and myself started off at 4 early morning to the airport and headed in. The Chennai airport is always busy with passengers. The flight name was Indigo and we were heading to Kolkata. After Check In and security check, we were asked to board a mini-van that would take us to the flight. The van moved slowly to the flight. It was still dark and the flight could be seen only because of the blue flashlights.

We walked up the stairs and met the entrance. Two airhostesses greeted us with a smile and showed us the way inside. I desultorily walked inside the flight and followed my parents. The inside looked beautiful with a wonderful combination of white and blue. They stopped somewhere in the middle and my dad asked me to take a corner seat near the window that was actually booked for him. Though not really interested in the corner seat, I agreed. My parents and my sister headed off to the back to find the remaining seats.

I found myself with a young couple sitting to my left. I looked out through the window. My seat was exactly beside the right wing of the plane. The sun had begun to rise. Nothing much was going on outside except for a crew who were sweating out to create another successful journey. After a few minutes, an announcement about the safety rules was made in Hindi followed by the same announcement in English. We were asked to switch off the mobiles (yeah! yeah!). Then the airhostess spaced themselves in equal distances in the pathway so that everyone would get a clear view of atleast one them. Then they mimicked the announcement (that was being made) in action. The airhostess just ahead of our seats looked as she was trying her best to control her laughter. We were asked to tie our seat belts.

The captain then introduced himself and the plane started moving. I looked out of the window. The sun had risen. The plane had to go to the runway before picking up speed to fly. After a couple of turns, it finally ended up in the runway, picked up speed and rose.

After a couple of minutes, I looked out the window and my eyes were treated with the beauty of the world. The plane had surpassed the lower layer of cloud. So all I could see now was what looked like a thin sheet of ice. It were the clouds and far away in the sky, I could spot the sun. I looked above and found the thicker clouds. My plane was still inclined and I came to know that we were reaching for the thicker clouds. When we struck the thicker one, it was complete white outside. As the wing brushed the clouds, I wondered how cold the plane would feel if it had life. When the plane reached its peek, the plane started moving straight. I looked out and I wished I had a camera. The thick clouds were all I could see and with the sun right above them, it shone brightly.

I returned to my copy of Sidney Sheldon book that I was reading. I was in the interesting part of the book when I noticed a hand stretched out towards me. The lady to my left had started taking pictures of the clouds using her mobile. “You aren’t allowed to use them”, I thought. “But without your SIM, you can”, I told myself. I thought of this before the journey but didn’t plan to do it. My phone could work in offline mode. If SIM card is the problem, why not remove it? So I took out my mobile, removed the SIM card, switched it on and managed to take a few pictures. Here are they.

After a while, the airhostesses came (The lady to my left immediately hid the mobile inside her bag. (So she had been using it in Online mode!)) with the trolley providing food at exorbitant prices. A vegetable sandwich costs 125 bucks!!! I had the money but preferred not to part away my money for a quick and unsatisfying snack. :p After I said no to them, I returned to the book and couldn’t hold on to it for more than five minutes. I closed the book and also my eyes. The next thing I remember was an announcement stating that the plane had almost reached Kolkata airport.

After a while, the plane landed at Kolkata Airport. The airhostesses waited for the passengers to bid them goodbye and we went out of the plane and found a mini-van similar to the one we boarded in Chennai. It took us to the terminus and there ended my second flight journey.
