What a pity!

Posted by Kavin on July 27, 2008

“What a pity!” – Inc’s favourite dialogue in school. :D Now it is a dialogue that can be used in post-school life too.

In most of the colleges including mine, sitting in the first bench is a sin (applicable only for boys ;) ). Nowadays the fourth row or the fifth row becomes the first bench. Once I was sitting in the fifth row and there were no students sitting before us. The staff iteratively asked the students of the last row to come front and finally we ended up in the last row.

There was a store in our MBA block. One could find engineering students more than the MBA or the MCA students. But now for some reason, they have shifted the store to another place in the college and the MBA block looks deserted. Once when I walked on the lonely corridor, I felt like I was watching “I am Legend” movie.

(The places used to be crowded at times. The door in the left side of the left picture used to be the store.)

After a long time, my classmates decided to mass bunk DSP hour. It was in the sixth hour exactly after lunch. Usually, if we decide to mass bunk, one of us informs the staff so that he/she wouldn’t get fooled to see an empty class. This time we decided to do the same and the responsibility fell in the hands of the girl representative of our class. She went and informed but the sir was only too happy to teach a single student.. She ended up as a victim. ;) Read her experience.

Last Thursday, when we had a unit test, two trucks collided with each other and got tilt blocking the entire road to our college. If it hadn’t happened, we would’ve reached the college in another five minutes. But since it happened, we were asked to take the detour. It was already getting late. I knew that the chance of the unit test getting cancelled was NIL because that day only my dept had tests and I knew that the department would risk the entire day for that test. We reached the college at 9 and the test began at 10. ;(

Copy Cats III – Trailed!

Posted by Kavin on July 13, 2008

Nicking a background score from a Hollywood film or from a pop album is well known in Tamil Cinema. But nicking the background score from a Hollywood movie trailer for the Kollywood film trailer is the new idea that runs in the minds of composers. Here are a few films I remember. I could’ve missed out one or two I know.

Music I:

Paruthi Veeran (2007): (copied from Johnny Quest)

One thing that is shocking about this trailer is that it is copied from a cartoon from the 80s and worst from a cartoon that is based on a science fiction. The music never matched at all. Yuvan lost on tunes??? Here is the original one.

Music II:

Arasangam (2008): (copied from James Bond)

Watch the end part of the video for the James Bond sound clip.

James Bond movie theme is a famous music score around the world. Why would any music director try to nick that tune??? Is that because the music director is the son of Deva? Here is a version of the James Bond movie.

Music III:

Dasavatharam (2008) : (Copied from Spiderman 3)

Check out the music clipping in the first portion.

The music correctly matches with the movie and is enjoyable. But why does Devi Sri Prasad, the BGM scorer of the film, nick it from a Hollywood movie rather than composing it? Here is the original score from the Spiderman 3 trailer.

Let us wait and see how many more music composers do it this way!

Oh Bot

Posted by Kavin on July 5, 2008

If you had been using Y! Messenger for a very long time, you would have come across several bots. Some of them are simple bots asking you to visit a site. Some are advanced bots that makes you wonder whether it is a human. I came across such bots several times One of those bots were so cleverly created that it took me a while to actually find out that it is a bot. I vaguely remember a conversation between the bot and myself. I knew it was a bot right from the time it greeted me. It was cleverly created but not clever enough to expect unanticipated replies. Lol.

Once upon a time, a convo between the bot and myself went something like this.

/* indicates comments (like C ;) )

Bot (It had some name): Hi sweety J. There?

Myself: Hi. (/* The bot doesn’t care whatever you type. It just waits for your reply.

Bot: asl?

Myself: 167/m/Mars (/*Again it doesn’t care whatever is the reply. It would just assume that you typed the reply and also asked back the same question)

Bot: Me 18/f/nyc. Ok Alright. I am really bored. Wanna do something exciting?

(.* Even if you didn’t reply, it may send a link asking you to visit)

Bot: Ok. View my profile at link. See you there.

These bots are dumb as you may think but some bots were even programmed to recognize the word ‘bot’ and reply accordingly. Once I asked a bot:

Bot: Hi J

Myself: Hi Bot! How are you?

Bot: Bot? Those automated programs that chat with you, right? Ha Ha J. Do I look like one? J

Programming enthusiasts experiment with these kinds of works. Though not cleverly done, it executes perfectly.

Bots doesn’t end there. Many companies have bots that send automated mails or replies to customers. Bots are often used in Data mining. For example, bot may send a mail to people who don’t visit their site regularly.

Long back, there was this Gaming website called Gamespot that I had subscribed to. I was receiving mails from the site. I never bothered to visit it or click on any links. But one such day, I received a mail that was really nice. It was like this.
