When Monday follows Tuesday…

Posted by Kavin on August 24, 2007

Some funny things have been occurring at my college recently. First, within few minutes of the commencement of the Unit Test, students finished their exams and started leaving the exam hall. Reason : The exam supervisor said, “There is no need to sleep inside the class once you have finished. You can leave”

The first years had their orientation programme last Monday, and as if its orientation for the rest of the batches too, the timetable was shifted (Monday to Tuesday and Tuesday to Monday). It was like Monday following Tuesday. The reason was there would be test during the first two hours every Monday. But wouldn’t it have been simple to have it during the first two hours on Tue??? How crazy the college management can get?

It’s a compulsory rule for the first years to possess a laptop for learning. There is an open rack near the college library for the students to place their bags and stuffs safely. There was a notice above this rack “Please do not keep your laptops and accessories here”. It was really funny. Who would place his/her laptop in an open rack and expect it to be safe?

On Wednesday, heavy rain struck my college. I was there in the open air with my friends, even though I knew it would rain in another few minutes. It was beautiful when we looked around, the clouds were too dark and the white buildings just contrasted them. My friend was taking photos when we saw the raindrops falling a few meters away from us but not over us. It meant that the rain was coming towards us, but instead of running away from it, we ran towards it. The result: I was completely drenched when I reached the college bus back to home.

The Boss!

I waited for a month to get over so that I could write a review on this movie, as everyone would’ve watched it by then. But now I realize that it has been two months since I watched this movie – Sivaji. I remember going with my friends – one who doesn’t like tamil movies, another one who doesn’t like super-heroism in tamil movies and another one who is so selective in watching tamil movies. The one who doesn’t like super-heroism had already watched the movie and was telling me before the movie that it is an average movie and watchable once. Alright, lets get to the plot!

Plot:
Sivaji (played by Rajini) returns from America to make his dream venture into action – a venture to uplift India’s economy. A don Adhiseshan (played by Suman) who thinks that Sivaji’s venture would put all of his business to an end opposes him. With his political influences, he tries to stop Sivaji and finally succeeds in doing so and also by doing so, Sivaji goes bankrupt. Meanwhile Sivaji had wooed Tamizhselvi (played by Shriya). But she, being brought up by an orthodox family, believes in an astrologer’s bidding that if she marries Sivaji, Sivaji’s life would be in grave danger. And hence after the downfall of Sivaji, she refuses to marry him.

Sivaji starts off once again from where he was in his childhood – with no money. With one rupee in hand (given by Adhiseshan to add insult to his injury), he goes opposite the direction of wind, thrashing whoever opposes him on his way. How he takes revenge on Adhiseshan and how he wins back Tamizhselvi forms the rest of the story!

Superstar magic:
Rajini’s trick once again worked. He is enthusiastic, cheerful and energetic throughout the movie, as he had portrayed the character of a youth returning from America. This film is a treasure for Superstar’s fans. The flipping of coin and the whole Athiradee song portrays Rajini’s style. Rajini’s bald get-up and change of style is a treat for fans and also for the ones waiting for some excitement.

Shankar’s touch:

The plot is clearly Shankar’s, with the story going against black money and corruption in India. As with the rest

of the part, he need not even involve as whatever he may do, Rajini would overshadow him.

Other characters:

Shriya has played the female lead role of the movie (You can find her in the songs and the scenes around the songs). Her role comes to an importance only in the second half.

Suman has played the villain of the movie. He was perfect for a don – fat, wearing dhotis, with rude expressions (I dunno why. The sunglasses made him look rude)

Vivek plays the comedian of the movie. Along with Rajini, he has done his job well. But in this movie, he had to control his tongue and stop bullying the hero, as the Superstar is the real boss of the movie.

Music:

The songs are great. The visualization of the song is absolutely great. Everyone who watched the movie wouldn’t go without commenting about the song sets (especially Sahana). The background score is well done (ARR is doing great with BGM these days). A.R.Rahman never fails with his job.

My opinion about the movie differs. Though I like the movie, I felt that the movie did not have enough of Shankar’s formula. Something was missing. The part of me being a fan enjoyed the movie whereas the movie was a disappointment for the other part of me being a Shankar fan. My rating would be

Story : 7/10

Music : 8.5/10

Overall : 7.5/10

A must watch for all Rajini fans. Picturisation was superb. The movie sets and the song sets are the best so far of Shankar’s.

Fooled!

Posted by Kavin on August 7, 2007

Last Friday, I missed my bus to college (I have been developing it as a habit). It was too late that I had to go to Madhya Kailash, a one-stop of hope for all those who misses the bus. I had to get down at two stops before Madhya Kailash to ensure that I didn’t miss any buses on the way. It was not intentional though. I boarded two wrong PTC buses (not actually but too complicated to explain). I finally reached Madhya Kailash by auto. Just taking the day off would have been a better option but that day I had test in the morning and I didn’t go to college the previous two days. Adding to that, I missed too many tests already. So I had to attend.(So much for a test) I knew I had missed all the buses, so I had to wait for 19 B which goes to Kelambakkam ( a town near to my college). Indeed a bus came after five minutes of waiting.

I had to go standing all the way. Thanks to a schoolmate I found in the bus, I had company. We wouldn’t have gone even 10 kms when someone in the bus shouted to his friend, “Hey, look there!”. Immediately for an instant, I knew what was coming, but before I realized it, it came before my eyes and I watched it only for a fraction of a second (or it seemed to be). My friend asked me what I saw and I knew that he had the answer. Some guy had died in an accident.

About one km ahead, just when I managed to get a seat in the bus, in a bus stop, a huge crowd boarded the bus and I saw too many familiar faces. Puzzled, I looked out. I saw around 10 familiar faces again most of them belonging to my class. Someone from the girls’ side shouted “Hey… the buses are coming. All of you get out!”. I had no time to look at the source of the voice. The crowd that got into the bus got down the next instant. Now I had a choice to make. I shouldn’t miss the test. If I go in the same PTC bus, I would be reaching the college too late that I would be missing the test. Maybe from what the girl said, I might have missed some bus that might have been late.

I immediately got down and saw five puzzled faces and our college bus nearby. More than twenty students were standing outside. The girls of my class were wondering why I had got down. Then there was a burst of laughter and before I could find out what happened, one of my friends told me what had happened. Their bus (one of the buses I travel in) had caused some accident and the driver had refused to stop the bus. The driver was caught somehow and the result was the students standing outside.

I was there completely fooled by the circumstances! I knew then that I had no other choice. I finally found a reason to bunk the test. Now I didn’t go looking for the reason, but the reason found me. One of the students had called up the management and they immediately responded by sending a bus to our destination. Maybe the girl who shouted misunderstood that. But we were still 30 kms away from college. So we had to wait more than 40 minutes. After reaching the college, it was just another day except we were told “Don’t worry guys, we got you retests”
