Give me fantasy!!! (Comparison between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings)

Posted by Kavin on August 5, 2006

This is purely my own work and I am not liable if anyone else claims this work to be his/her.

Harry PotterBooks on fantasies lured the hearts of the men into an imaginary world of real life. No wonder these stories dwell and continue to bore deep into the hearts of The Ringmany. We have come across many stories. Two of the wonderful pieces of work are Harry Potter, by J.K.Rowling and Lord of the Rings by J.R.R.Tolkien. Both the authors have had a predilection for magic and incredibly, both books can make you to mull things over.

Both Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings revolve around the same subject – The war between the good and the evil. Though they are of the same subject, they progress in an offbeat manner. Both the authors have a different theory and postulates about the races. Frodo Baggins
Harry PotterHarry Potter is a story about a boy named Harry Potter and his tremendous adventures in the opulent Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and his encounter with his counterpart, the so-called Voldemort, a Dark Wizard. Lord of the Rings is a story that revolves around a single possessive ring that tries to incentivise people to safeguard it until it grows stronger enough to let Sauron, the Dark Lord, to take over the world.

Albus DumbledoreWe can’t help but notice certain similarities between these two fantasies. In Harry Potter, there are two races of men – the magical folks (wizards) and the non-magical folks (muggles). The whereabouts of the wizards have been shrouded in secrecy from the muggles. In Lord of the Rings, the races Gandalf (wizard)of men branches into many. Hobbits are the race most likely to be known – a group of short, enthusiastic and cheerful people. Another known race is the dwarfs, a vigilant group of short men living in their own pride. Apart from the people, you would next come across the wizards. Unlike Harry Potter, Wizards most likely mingle with men in Lord of the Rings.

Bilbo Baggins (an Hobbit) Gimli (a dwarf) Dobby (house elf)

It is very interesting to note that both authors have a very different idea about the races. For example, in Lord of the Rings, Elves are considered as Elvesthe symbol of beauty, peace and purity. They usually have long hair and have ears quite bigger. Their shine exaggerates their beauty and they can foretell the future. A remarkable thing about them is that they have great healing power and elves are known to be immortal. On the contrary, in Harry Potter, house-elves as they are called so, are faithful and ugly creatures. They measure only about 2 or 3 foot and have big bulgy eyes and very wide ears. Though they are equally powerful as wizards, they are bound to serve wizards and the torn clothes they wear is the symbol of enslavement. House elves can make good messengers too.
Dementors

In Harry Potter, one would come across the death eaters – the evil faithfNazgulsul lot who serve under the Dark Lord. Alongside Lord Voldemort, they threaten the wizarding world. They will do anything for the Dark Lord even if it costs their lives. Another creature that one would come across is the Dementor – the creature that one doesn’t want to meddle with. They wear black hooded clothes and float in the air, sucking out happiness as they pass through. They guard the wizard prison and their margin of punishment even goes to sucking souls out using their shapeless mouth. In Lord of the Rings, you would come across the Nazguls, the faithful servants of Sauron. They were once kings put under the enslavement of Sauron and they can never be killed by the likes of men. Like the dementors, they wear hooded black clothes. They ride either on black horses or on dragon like beasts and are called as nightriders. Lord Voldemort

Both the stories are related in some way. Both the Dark Lords take lifelesSauron the Dark Lords form – Voldemort after trying to kill Harry when he was just a year old and Sauron when he gets the ring cut down from his hand. In both the books, the heroes take the pain in suffering the task they are entitled to. Both have marks of curse. Harry has a scar on his forehead while Frodo, a character in Lord of the Rings has a scar on his forearm. Both feel the sense of pain on their scars, when the enemy is nearby.

Both Lord of the Rings and UrukhaiHarry Potter have a variety of creatures. In Lord of the Rings, you can find the
Orcs andBuckbeak the Hippogriff the Urukhais – both warriors of the dark lord Sauron. Harry Potter is no exception. It has various creatures – Dementors, werewolves, Centaurs, giant spiders, Blast-ended skrewts. Harry Potter has no margin for creatures.

Both the booHarry, Ron and Hermioneks are just like a drama, involving humor, love, bravery, war and most importantly

friendship. Harry’s love for his lost parents and the friendship between Harry, Ron and

Hermione is well known in Harry Potter and the friendship between Frodo Baggins, Sam

wise Gamgee, Pippin and Merry in Lord of the Rings should be well appreciated. Harry Potter desperate to meet his dead parents and Frodo desperate to get back home and to lead a peaceful life brings out tears from the readers’ eyes.
Legolas (Elf) Severus Snape Rubeus Hagrid
Both Tolkien and Rowling have emphasized importance on certain characters. When speaking about Lord of the Gollum aka SmeagolRings, one should not forget Gollum, a very important character. Born as Smeagol, it gets possessed by the ring and gets transformed into Gollum. Some other very important characters are Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli who are the warriors who help to fight the battle against the dark lord. In Harry Potter, one should not forget Snape, a person most loathed by Harry and Hagrid, Harry’s most dearest friend from Hogwarts. Malfoy, Black and Lupin also come into play

Notice any SIMILARITIES??? (between the left and the right>
Sirius Black

Remus Lupin

J.K.RowlingBoth the authors seem to have lived in the world of their story. Every character in the book is framed well. J.K.Rowling has set the story in 90s and the story was written in simple English. Even the one who loathes fantasies and who believes in the words of Vernon, a character in the book, “There is no such thing as magic” will start to love the boy who lived and will end up in saying, “I love magic”. Harry Potter movies are a great hit everywhere covering the audience of every age. In fact, J.K.Rowling, the author, has become the most successful author in the world.
J.R.R.Tolkien
J.R.R Tolkien, author of the 50s, has set the story in ancient times when wizards and elves existed. The author had used complicated words and the poems and songs in the book tell his love for poetry. The author also has designed maps in the books to ensure that the reader doesn’t miss anything in the world of Lord of the Rings. Though the story was finished long back by the late Tolkien, many authors are bringing up with the continuation of the story after such demand from the readers. New authors may continue the story, but Tolkien will still take pride in his masterpiece ‘Lord of the Rings’

Both the authors have proved that fantasies are the best way to attract the readers. Both the series of Harry Potter books and Lord of the Rings were made into movies and all of them have been a hit. Lord of the Rings III part bagged 13 oscars for it and Harry Potter IV bagged the most successful movie of the year earning millions in the first week. Not to forget the VI book which got sold out a million copies in the first week. Let it be Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, a fan of fantasies wouldn’t have missed both. Yes the craze for these two books will never fade unless a rival series comes into play.
